Shoes are worn for different purposes, so you can understand that running shoes cannot provide necessary support you need to play tennis. The game of tennis requires you to have proper support sideways. A pair of running shoes does not have such features as it is designed to give you frontward support. While playing tennis, the player repeatedly draws his/her feet all over the court, so there is lot of pressure on the toe and heel areas. 

The tennis shoes need to be strong enough to undergo such heavy dragging without much damage. Many people think that there isn't much difference in tennis shoes and basketball or running shoes. Though basketball shoes are more similar to tennis shoes than running footwear, basketball footwear is quite high at the ankle. High ankle support is not required in tennis. You need tennis shoes that are low at ankle area as this increases the flexibility of the shoes.
